HELP! looking for formal studies, surveys re bellydance benefits

I am designing a program to work with women who are dealing with addiction and recovery (in Mobile, Ala.). I have always heard (and said to my students) that belly dance builds confidence, enhances self-esteem, is therapeutic, etc.

BUT does anyone know for sure if any studies have been done to support this assertion? I would like to know as it would be helpful for me to be able to present this information to the people who are in charge of the programs in which I will work.

LOCAL DANCERS CELEBRATE RETURN HOME AFTER DEVASTATING FLOOD

BIRMINGHAM, AL, Sept 21, 2009 – After floodwaters displaced them from their dance studio last May, Devyani Dance Company will celebrate the return to their newly repaired studio in Irondale by performing for the home crowd at the Eighteenth Annual Irondale Whistle Stop Festival on Saturday, September 26.

This world-renowned belly dance troupe will take the Main Stage of the Whistle Stop Festival at 10:30am this Saturday. Devyani enjoys a long history performing at the festival that celebrates the rich history of their city.

Heavy storms that hit the Birmingham area in May left tremendous flood damage at Devyani Dance Center, which is located at 2621 Crestwood Blvd in Irondale, forcing it to close temporarily. In the interim, classes were held at the Children’s Dance Foundation in Homewood.

Despite the challenges brought about by their damaged studio, Devyani continued to train regularly throughout the past year and performed in such places as Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco, Chattanooga, Augusta, and Atlanta. Locally, the women were honored to perform alongside John Scalici and Juka Tribe at Bottletree in June. Out of the Darj, a Middle Eastern drumming group housed at Devyani Dance Center, made their debut the same evening.

In honor of the strength and determination that these women exhibited throughout this crisis, numerous dancers from about the southeast came out to share in the joy when the studio was officially re-opened on August 1. Dance numbers were performed by the likes of Notinee, Amberetta, and the drum solo queen herself, Aziza Nawal, who also taught a workshop earlier in the day.

About Devyani Dance Company: Located in Irondale, AL, Devyani Dance Center is home to the professional belly dance troupe, Devyani Dance Company. Megha Gavin, its founder and director, teaches the American Tribal Style (ATS) format of belly dance and enjoys the only official partnership with Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance in San Francisco, who is the creator of ATS belly dance. Classes are offered at the studio throughout the year and Middle Eastern items such as textiles and jewelry are available for purchase. Devyani boasts weekly performances on Wednesdays at Silver Coin Indian Restaurant in Hoover.

Three months ago, this internationally known studio suffered substantial flood damage and has since been closed for repairs and remodeling. Now it is reopening and will be better than ever!

Devyani Dance Center is Birmingham’s International Dance Culture Connection! Devyani offers classes such as American Tribal Style Belly Dance, Irish Dance, Flamenco, Hula, African dance, Indian dance, Ballet and even Yoga. This world dance center is sure to open your mind, body, balance, grace and strength to new possibilities.

Devyani’s grand re-opening is a weeklong event that starts on Saturday August 1st. From 10am to 3pm come explore drum solos with Aziza Nawal. Aziza was recently featured on IAMED's Belly-Dance-O-Rama video and has wowed audiences with her dynamic drum solo performances. She will be teaching a brand new exciting choreography featuring her signature technique and interpretation.

That evening at 7pm Devyani will host a hafla (party)! Live music, fire dances and some of the best bellydancers from all over the Southeast including world renown and Birmingham's own Devyani!
Devyani’s haflas are always a fun event, but this promises to be the best one yet! Tickets are $10. Get there when doors open at 6:30 to guarantee your spot.

Significance of the Lotus in the Moving Meditation

I've already posted to the FCBD tribe, but....

Could anyone help me with this? Carolena has explained the significance of a lot of the movements in the moving meditation ie: the space you dance on, your ancestors, your teachers etc.....but I'm not sure I remember an explination of the lotus. In egyptian lore,it stands for creation and rebirth. Is this the cas in the meditation or is there another significance?

We are really excited about this upcoming event. We've got the ball rolling on getting the studio up and running again so we'll be able to host Aziza at our home studio. :-)

Fund Raiser for Devyani ... anyone else in??? :)

Earlier today, I saw the latest installment of "Devyani TV" and I was so upset by how upset they all were, that I decided to seriously consider having a fund raiser for them. We were going to have a hafla/going away party (in June) for 2 of our ladies who are moving in July, and I think this will be a good time to do a fund raiser, too. Kill 2 birds with one stone... have a 50/50 split, sell baked goods, put out the tip jar, etc.

So I posted this in my Facebook, and Jen from Tamarind replied to tell me she's doing the same thing. And that made me so happy!!!

Anyone else willing to have some kind of fund raiser in their town? Every little bit helps you know. And with there being so many of us, I think we can really do something to help our sisters out.

What say ye' all? Up for the challenge?? :)

Devyani Studio Update - Important

On Sunday, May 3rd Devyani Dance Center sustained devastating damages due to flooding.

For this reason we are sad to report that all classes are canceled until further notice.

We are currently trying to find an alternate space to hold our May 9th workshop.

As of right now, our May 16th workshop and hafla has been postponed.

We will keep you posted on all classes, workshops and events as we receive information. Please check our website often for updates. www.devyani.net

The amazing support we have received in just a few hours is much appreciated. It has definitely been a sad day. Everyone's been asking what they can do to help. Here are a few ways:

Be patient. We promise to work as hard as we can to get classes up and going soon.

Support our performances. All performances are still on. Come out and show your support every Wednesday at Silver Coin in Hoover. We will also be performing at the Dog Daze festival in Trussville on Saturday May 9th. We'd love to see you. It would be a great way to lift dancers' spirits!

Buy some merchandise. To make a long story short, the flash flooding happened during a workshop so there were actually several students there that helped save all the merchandise. It's currently sitting in dancer's homes. If you had been eying a Gwahazee coat, skirt, cds, dvds, etc now is the time to buy. Just email devyani@bellsouth.net or ishimmy4me@gmail.com and we will get the merchandise to you.
All unsold merchandise will be up for ebay auction sometime next weekend. Merchandise sales will hopefully help to offset some of the extensive cost of this cleanup. For this reason, auction discounts may not be substantial if any. We sincerely appreciate your support. Please spread the word.

Oh we're not done yet!

Whew!! Can I just say Holy Cow that was an amazing two weeks?! We're back from Cues & Tattoos and Tribal Pura:Phoenix! I can't begin to tell you guys how great it was seeing like 14 ATS dancers from two different sides of the country getting up on stage and dancing like we dance together all the time. Aside from a monitor blow out (imagine 14 zillers that can't hear the music) the show was great.

Phoenix was awesome!! Kamalah, Red Lotus, MoonSister Bellydance, Devyani and Carolena all up on stage (squishing actually) dancing like we are sisters (cause we are). I had never danced with three of ladies and two of them it had been well over a year! it was a great experience.

I'm coming to Birmingham!

Hi! I'm Tonje, and I'm coming for the GS/TT at the end of next month. I've been up & down the West Coast, but never to your part of the world.

I'm really excited to meet & dance with new people, and I have a big favour to ask...can anyone help me out with a place to stay? It's always more fun to stay with people than in a hotel, plus the $CDN to $USD is making this an expensive trip... I'm an easy houseguest, I promise!

As a bonus, I can bring fun things from Canada, like non-prescription codeine painkillers- not that I'm pushing drugs or anything :)

Using fun combinations, we'll breakdown several basic movements and their correct technique from the Tribal vocabulary. You'll walk away with mini-choreographies you can plug into your dance and effective setups for some of the faster moving steps and turns.

Thanks to everyone who attended the first Nomadic Nights. Everything happened on the "fly". My buddy Dave, resident Middle Eastern percussion teacher, taught everybody two Balkan songs. We sang, tapped the drums, and tooted our horns ; ) Good Times!

Nomadic Nights will occur every Sunday at 6:00pm at Nomadic Tapestry Movement and Music Studio on Jordan Lane.

In the spirit of folkloric education and preservation; Dave, anyone, or myself will teach several folk songs from one country or region of the world each week.

I will be teaching several folk songs from Mexico this Sunday.

We provide tea and coffee, but feel free to bring libations or food to share.
Donations are gratefully accepted for facility usage.

ABC 33/40 and Southern Womens' show!

WOW! Our booth is all set up (and it rocks) and we are ready for the weekend at the BJCC!

Megha will be on ABC33/40 tomorrow doing a mehndi (henna) demonstration!

I was watching my tribal basics vol.4 and Carolena is doing a shimmy and levels where she is squatting. How do you keep your shimmy when your thigh muscles are tightning up while you are in a squat? Of course she makes it look so easy! But I know it's not!

Details for Sept 13 & 14 ATS workshop at Devyani Dance Center

We'll be doing the costuming segment on Sunday morning so you will want to bring any costuming you have and your makeup so you can get some practice in getting ready. Then you can dance in costume for the rest of the day. You might want to bring lunch or maybe we can have someone go out and get things for us if you don't want to go out in costume.

Be sure to bring your finger cymbals (which I'm sure you always do.)

We'll have an informal hafla, potluck sort of thing, at the studio Saturday night at 7:00. Anyone who wants to dance can.

If you have any other questions just lt me know. :-) Studio will be open at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

Silver Coin Indian Grill on Lorna Road has a wonderful buffet on Wednesday evenings that has some loyal followers.

Besides the fare of both north and south India, there is another attraction on Wednesdays -- belly dancing, which has become quite a hit.

The restaurant opens at 5:30 p.m., and the buffet begins at 6:30 p.m. and continues through 9 p.m. A la carte is also available. Cost for the buffet is $14.95 for adults, and $7.95 for children.

The buffet has several options, serving both vegetarian and nonvegetarian items, including Masala Dosa or Uttappam, both favorite South Indian dishes. Masala Dosa and Uttapam are made of the same batter, consisting of rice and lentils. Masala Dosa is a crepe with a stuffing of potato; uttapam is a pancake with a variety of toppings, which is served with sambhar and coconut chutney.

From north India, there are kababs and breads, which are cooked in the tandoor (clay oven).

The belly dancing, performed by Devyani Dance Company, will be at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Silver Coin is at 3321 Lorna Road, Suite 13, in Hoover. The phone is 823-9070.

The restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and for dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Lunch Friday and Saturday is 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and dinner 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch, and dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Healing energy needed

When I was in D.C. I had the honor of knowing and dancing with an amazing woman. Kim/Kaihea has been fighting cancer for the last two years and is back in the hospital yet again. If you can spare some energy, please send some her way. The post below is from her wonderful and loving man.

Our Kaihea is still in the hospital and still very very sick.

And there isn't a whole lot anyone can do; there are things that need to heal in her body and get back to work, so we're trying to take as much stress as possible off of those areas so they can heal and get back to work...and we wait and hope and it's slow and she's still very sick and it's not going well.

So, um, bring it on, y'all, whatever you do to coerce magic and miracles from the universe, pray, chant, sing, dance, visualize, whatever you got, we need it now. Turn it on and pump it up and don't stop until you can't not stop. Think flow, think air and nutrition and energy flowing smoothly through her body despite all obstacles and nuisances and clutter. We've got a small army of very impressive doctors here working the case, but they haven't seen some of the things K and I have seen, and they haven't seen what y'all are capable of when you put your minds to something.
