Hey everyone,
I am in the process of writing an article for Jareeda magazine and, for journalistic purposes (hee hee), please take a moment to tell me:
Why do you dance? i.e...what is the motivation behind your dance?
Simple as that.
XOXOXOXO

Re: Why dance?
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 3:23 PMO.K. while I do know that I have not been to class in a while, having two girls it means me time! It is the one thing I do for me, and having all these great ladies as friends is an added bonus. It's wonderful exercise for the body as well as the soul. Let me know if you need any photos for this ;-) -

Re: Why dance?
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 4:40 PMI dance to grow as a person, to learn new things. I get to dance with wonderful people and while it is hard work at times, it is also fun as well.
I like performing, which I really surprised myself on that one.
I don't dance to be the best, but I dance to simply well, dance. -

Re: Why dance?
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 7:50 PMHey ladies! Actually Rachel Brice on the Indigo tribe posed this same question a while back on the Indigo tribe and she got over a 100 responses, all illuminating and inspiring! Here is what I wrote.....
"O.k. tribal bellydance, specifically ATS, changed my life! Self esteem issues from years of sexual, emotion & physical abuse made me so self conscious of my body and I literally wanted to disappear. Wore baggy clothes, didn't want to bring attention to my breasts much less anything that hinted that I was even a woman! And it also made me feel graceful! Something I never thought I was! Always the tomboy... To be able to look at other women and not be shameful of that....literally....I always thought I couldn't look much less appreciate other women! It made me a lesbian, not that that's a bad thing but it really confused the hell outta me.....women are great, beautiful, sexy, amazing,.... I can appreciate them all without fear....all because of ATS & tribal bellydance....I can bare my belly because of the dance....I can bear my shoulders...show skin....wear sexy clothing like Melo's....Can you imagine never being able to express the hurt and anger until you're well into your 30's....sh*t! Every time I perform it's cathartic, my revenge to those who hurt me, I am soooo glad I found this dance and am able to have a second chance to be....a woman!!!! And I want to inspire other woman who, like me, live in fear, in shame.... Kami Liddle once said to me after correcting my stooped posture why I always did that, and I said to not draw attention to myself and she said, "well, it draws more attention to yourself if you ask me!" And ,by george ,she was right. I'll never forget that... And thank goodness for Carolena for creating such a beautiful and healing dance!!! I could dance this dance this forever!!!! Thanks for asking!

Re: Why dance?
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 8:09 PMI'm not sure why I started at 3 yrs old, but all the Tap, Jazz, Ballet, & Pointe lessons I took for 14 years helped me to develop better posture and self-esteem. It also allowed for an outlet of expression that is hard to find in anything else! Since starting Belly dancing last year, I feel even more empowered and confident in my body and what I can do with it! Motivationally speaking, I dance to let all the week's stresses out and to re-energize myself for the days to come!
I'm ready to be off Maternity leave and hit the floor!

Re: Why dance?
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 7:01 AMI started dancing for exercise, but I continued because it made me feel good. I found a place where, although all of us were different, we fit when we were together. I lived in Bham until I was 14, then moved to Southern California until college, and returned to attend Auburn. The combination of living the two different places gave me a different perspective, and although I made friends, I never felt I really fit at Auburn, and had trouble making good friends after leaving college. Then I showed up at a dance class and met a group of strong, independent women who were warm and welcoming. I have made some wonderful and interesting friendships through dancing. And the dancing itself, has helped me become more confident in myself, in both who I am and how I look. I remember looking at myself in costume before a show last December, and for the first time in my life (at the age of 37), I thought I looked hot.. a word I had never associated with myself before.. I love to dance because I can be sick or in a bad mood and by the end of class I feel better, it challenges me and pushes me past my limits and it is helping me grow into the person I hope to become... oh yeah, and it's a lot of fun too..;) -

Re: Why dance?
Sun, August 24, 2008 - 8:30 AMDancing makes me feel like I am someone special. I can do this! I found that I can dance and feel great doing it. I no longer have to set around just watching. I can join in and feel more like a "girlie" than just a bump on a log. And by putting on my costume, I feel like I am pretty for a change.
