ACE Certification/study materials

topic posted Wed, February 13, 2008 - 10:52 AM by  julie
Hey you guys. I think I am going to try for my ACE certification. I've been doing some covert personalized weight loss stuff over the past 5 years or so, and I'm thinking about doing some more fitness work again (its been 10 years at least!!)

Anyway, Traci, I know you do so much, and might have some stuff, but I figured I'd ask everyone just in case:

Does anyone have any RECENT (like within the past 2years) ACE training materials. They are a bit pricey, as are the exams, so I'd like to save anything I can.

I'd mostly like the PT material, with the Anatomy and Kinesiology notes, as well as the Professional planning info. Also, practice tests and flash cards are welcome.

I don't know about a date. I'm thinking about May in Orlando, but that's awfully soon....

I have the complete Group Fitness prep set from 2006. Unfortunately, they changed it dramatically in 2007, so before I was ready to try the exam everything I had was useless. (and they even admitted it) The anatomy stuff should still be good though. I'll see what I can find.

Oh, if you want a study buddy, let me know. I'm prolly about to have some serious free time, and will need to replace the office-monkey paycheck. Now may be a good time to look back into ACE.

I don't know if the personal trainer ones are, but the group fitness definitely is. The version I have focuses rather exclusively on old-school aerobics classes. (I was quite bummed when I got to that part, I have no desire to teach aerobics!) Apparently ACE has finally joined the rest of us and now has info on other types of classes as well.

I've got a lot of resources but I did my ACE training in '94 so they are pretty old. Good luck!

Aw. Well, I knew you would, but that's is a wee outdated, I'm afraid. What do you think about AFAA? I hear it is pretty easy compared to ACE, and not as widely accepted, but I had someone recommend I get that now, so I can work while preparing for the ACE. Is that really necessary?
Marci - I'd love to pour over your study materials.

I believe with AFAA certifications you actually do a practical as well, so there is more physical time invested in the training (but things could be a changin'). Personally, and let me first say I am a bit biased because I went with ACE, I feel that ACE has a better reputation and the exam is more challenging. Also because of my association with YogaFit, I prefer ACE. YogaFit and ACE have somewhat of a partnership and that has a lot to do with the fact that AFAA inappropriately used much of Beth Shaw's work (YogaFit creator) in launching its own yoga certification program- bad karma in the yoga world if you ask me. Beth is such an amazing individual and truly has a heart for yoga, animals, and bringing yoga to the world regardless of spiritual conviction, socioeconomic status, etc. Nutshell:save your money now and get the certification that is appropriate for your level of excellence.
